August 7 ~ This Week!
This Week at the Market
Fresh sweet corn is a summer treat, especially served steaming hot and slathered with butter! The Monona Farmers’ Market is hosting its second annual Harvest Corn Boil on Sunday, August 7. Complimentary fresh, locally grown corn-on-the-cob will be served starting around 10:00 am until it runs out. Many thanks go to the Monona Ladies Improvement Society and Litchfield Plumbing for sponsoring the event. Very special thanks to charter market vendor, Jim Nehmer, for donating the corn. Donations are welcome and will be used to support the market.
Sweet corn is available for purchase at Nehmer’s Produce and Greenhouse booth and Emerald Meadows Family Farm booth. For that mouthwatering flavor it’s best to cook the corn the day it’s picked. To spice it up a bit, try a flavored butter. Sun-dried tomato butter is simple and tasteful.
Sun-dried Tomato Butter
- ¼ cup butter, softened
- 2 ounces sun-dried tomatoes (about 6 large), softened in boiling water and chopped
- 2 tablespoons Italian parsley, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons fresh basil, finely chopped
Using a spoon, mix butter with other ingredients. Roll into a log shape and wrap in plastic wrap or wax paper. Refrigerate until firm, 2 to 3 hours, then soften to room temperature before serving.
Back by popular demand, Steve Radke, a professionally trained pianist, will entertain with a wide variety of keyboard favorites.
If you have gardening questions, the Master Gardener volunteers will be available to help you out. Master Gardeners are at the market on the first and third Sundays of each month. Stop by for expert gardening advice!
